Roger Mittnacht
Exploring the Complexities of Human Relationships and Cultures through Film.
Roger Mittnacht can remember the exact moment when he wanted to become a filmmaker. He was watching Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and observing the relationship between the characters played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman (a home nurse hired to care for a dying man), and Jason Robards (the critically-ill patient.)
“That was one of the first times I can remember being profoundly moved by the relationship between two characters on screen. I can remember thinking to myself, I want to make other people feel the way I’m feeling right now.”
That singular cinematic experience not only served as a source of inspiration, it became a professional spark that motivated Roger to begin cutting his teeth in the TV/Film industry- first as a broadcasting technician for AMC Networks, and then with Disney Steaming Services, where he’s currently employed.
Throughout his creative journey, Roger’s been developing a filmmaking style that tells “slice of life” stories in an original way, allowing viewers to settle into narratives in the same way that they settle into great books, or prestige TV episodes. Through Roger’s work, there’s a maturity in pacing. Audiences grow to care about the plot of the story, but care equally as much about the characters that he’s exploring.
He’s interested in the “who” just as much as he’s interested in the “what.”
As one of our newest Artists in Residence, HC&F couldn’t be more excited to be working with Roger during the first cycle of our 2022 production season. During his Residency, we aim to introduce him to WGA writers who share a similar storytelling sensibility, look forward to inviting these writers to table reads attended by filmmakers and actors alike.
Most of all, we aim to tell another great story with Roger while introducing our creative community to this skilled and thoughtful storyteller.
